Increasing Stitches
Beginner Knitting Lessons, Part 9
Today we tell you how to add stitches. Yarn over is one of the mostly widespread means for increasing stitches in knitting. It is used both for knitting pattern, and for give shape.
There are normal and backwards (reverse) yarn overs. A normal yarn over is similar to a classical stitch: right loop of the stitch is in front. A backwards yarn over is similar to a twisted stitch: left loop of the stitch is in front.
In order to do a normal yarn over, grab a working yarn with the end of the right needle (the needle should move clockwise).
In order to do a backwards yarn over, grab a working yarn with the end of the right needle (the needle should move counterclockwise).
A normal yarn over (a yarn over) is used by default. If somewhere need use a backwards yarn over, this is always stated in the description.
As a straight yarn over is used most often, let us examine it in detail.
Cast on 30 stitches for the pattern and knit 4 rows of stockinette stitches. Mark the center of the element by the marker ring or a simple paper clip. Two central stitches (to the left and to the right of the marker) will be the leading ones. Before and after the leading stitches we are doing yarn overs in every right side row.
In the wrong side rows the first yarn over will be knitted through the front loop with the purl stitch.
The second yarn over is knitted through the back loop. The yarn over is knitted through the back loop similarly to the twisted purl stitch: insert the needle from right to left through the back loop.
If it is difficult for you to knit a purl stitch through the back loop, you may use the same method as in the previous lesson.
In this way knit several rows. Make the yarn over with classic and twisted stitches.
As you can see, the place of stitch adding, where the yarn overs have been knitted by the twisted stitch, is hardly visible. While in the place where a classic stitch has been used, a hole is formed - lace.
Rule: it is more convenient to increase stitches along the right side (unless otherwise specified in the description).
