You can hold the crochet hook two ways: either as a pencil or as a knife. Both ways is correct. Use the one which is convenient and easy for you and your hands.

And, finally, fourth method, which I have met only from Russian crocheters. I began to crochet just this way. This method strongly differs from other methods. Thumb and index finger of left hand you hold the slip knot and then they hold your work. And middle finger of left hand holds and directs the working yarn.
