How to hold the Crochet Hook

You can hold the crochet hook two ways: either as a pencil or as a knife. Both ways is correct. Use the one which is convenient and easy for you and your hands.

So how do better to hold the crochet hook, as a pencil or as a knife? Opinions crocheters cardinally differ. Some think that the hands get tired less when they hold the hook as pencil, others think otherwise. Some have mastered the both methods. So you need  try different ways and rely on own feelings.

How to hold the Yarn

There are many ways to hold the yarn. Let's look at the most common ways.

First make the slip knot on the crochet hook.

Method 1 (recommended way) the location of the yarn during crochet

Thumb and middle finger of left hand you hold the slip knot (then they hold your work). The working yarn goes through index finger into a fist. Index finger holds and directs the working yarn. Tension of yarn is adjusted ring finger and little finger, which squeezing or weaken the working yarn.

Method 2 the location of the yarn during crochet

Some crocheter wrap the working yarn around index finger for convenience and for additional control tension of yarn.

Method 3 the location of the yarn during crochet

Another popular way of control the tension of yarn this is wrap the yarn around little finger and then the yarn goes on the outer side of the palm to index finger.

Method 4 the location of the yarn during crochet

And, finally, fourth method, which I have met only from Russian crocheters. I began to crochet just this way. This method strongly differs from other methods. Thumb and index finger of left hand you hold the slip knot and then they hold your work. And middle finger of left hand holds and directs the working yarn.

The question naturally arises - which method of crochet choose? Try all ways and choose the one, which convenient for you and your hands.
